When I was a kid, we had halfpenny coins, pennies, three-penny bits, sixpences (tanners), shillings (bobs), florins (two shillings), half-crowns, ten bob notes, pounds, fivers and tenners, etc. It was fascinating seeing the heads of former monarchs on the old coins and notes. I once found a George III penny.
All of these were swept aside for decimalisation… 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, etc.
That system is more efficient, but much less characterful.

Finding a George III penny as a kid sounds like such a small thrill, and it’s true that decimalisation traded away a lot of that character for tidy round numbers. “Tanners” and “bobs” definitely have more personality than “5p” and “10p.”
