Many thanks to my wife, Yvonne, for the bible quotes that inspired this post.
Isaiah 40:26 is a famous biblical passage where God’s creative power and intimate knowledge of the universe are compared to the stars in the night sky.
In the New International Version (NIV), it reads:
“Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.”
Key Themes & Meaning:
- Omnipotence: God’s power is so absolute that He leads the stars out like an army, orchestrating the cosmos with ease.
- Intimacy: Despite the countless number of stars, He knows each of them by name.
- Faith: The verse is meant to remind believers that if God does not lose track of even a single star, He will not lose track of His people or their circumstances.
Psalm 147:4 states: “He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name“.
Key Meaning & Context
- God’s Power: It highlights God’s ultimate creative power, as He can easily count and maintain the vast number of stars in the universe.
- Intimate Knowledge: By naming the stars, it emphasises that God’s knowledge is incredibly detailed and personal.
- Comfort: Paired with the very next verse (Psalm 147:5), which notes His “understanding is infinite”, the passage is often used to remind believers that if God cares for the cosmos with such precision, He deeply knows and cares for the intimate details of individual human lives.
